Software to work on your pictures

When you use Windows there is a lot of software you can use to work on your pictures. Most famous are Photoshop and Lightroom. But Linux also has its software to do that: GIMP and Darktable. (yes a sort of the opposite of Lightroom).

Besides there is the free program NIK filters, that used to be owned by Google and given out free. It can still be found on the internet to download. I used it all the time when I was still under Windows and I was afraid I would be going to miss it very much when I switched to Linux. Therefore I decided to keep one computer running Windows to be able to work with the NIK filters. But Windows decided otherwise: it crashed with an update. And “ restoring” the system meant: delete all your programs and replace some of them with Windows solutions. So only Linux computers now at home.

But now I use Darktable. It has the same, if not more possibilities as the NIK filters. You can enhance your pictures so that they have more impact. I love it. When there is no manipulation necessary for which I have GIMP, then Darktable is more than enough to get the work done.

Here are two pictures. One is the original jpg file and the other has been worked on in Darktable. I won’t have to tell you which is which.

It needs some getting used to, but when you start feeling at home within Linux Mint, you will or know what other program to use for your goal, or how to work around it.

It is said that you can use Windows programs within Wine. A sort of a translator that makes Windows exe files work within Linux. But don’t get too enthusiastic, cause a lot of these programs do not work, or it takes quite an effort for a new user to get things done.

It has to be said tho, that there are tons of examples step by step on how to make things work. You just need time and patience. You are blessed when you have both.
